How
to Write Powerful Letters
to Government Leaders
The most effective way to influence your legislators
is to write to them. I have relatives in the government (pity me)
and they tell me that the usual ratio is
1 short
letter = 10 long ones = 50 phone calls =
1000 emails.
Notice that short
letters get more attention than long ones! This
is because your representative is busy, too. By writing a short note that
is to the point, you actually save time for both of you and make it more
likely that you will be listened to. Other pointers for your notes your
congress-critter:
1) One note, one comment. Only write about one thing in the note;
never give a laundry list, as it less effective.
2) Let them know when they do well! If the only time your
congress-critter hears from you is when you want to complain, well -
no-one likes a whiner! Noddy's idea of sending a short
"congratulations!" note is *perfect*! It lets them know that
you exist and you care.
3) Form letters are better than nothing; form email is worse than
nothing. A form letter at least indicates that you spent ten minutes
of your time - that this is an important issue for you. But the other
word for form emails is "spam".
4) If you are in town, drop by! Find out when your congress-critter
will be back in the state, and go see him/her if you have time. If you go
to Washington DC, try to stop by her/his office. Even if you can't make
your schedules meet, you'd be surprised how gratified they are that you
tried! If you do meet, then you've got a direct line to give your feedback
on how things are going.
5) The same rules apply for meetings as for letters - short, sweet, and to
the point. NEVER mention fundraising! (This not only risks running
afoul of election laws, it is rude.) DO mention if you'd like to
help with the re-election effort!
To sum up, this is *our* government - that's what "of the people, by
the people, and for the people" means. It is up to you to make
certain that it does not "perish from this earth"...

A typical effective letter to a congress-critter:
Dear
Senator Breaux,
I saw in the Lafayette Advertiser that your work on the Migratory
Bird Conservation Commission has once again made Louisiana a better
place to live; the money to restore the Louisiana's Chenier Plain
Coastal wetlands will be put to good use, I'm sure. And, given your
hard work protecting the environment, I'm certain that you understand
the importance of decreasing greenhouse gasses. It is the rising
sea-level caused by these gasses that helped to destroy the coastal
marshes of Mermentau River Basin.
Now I know that Louisiana is a major producer of oil and gas for the
US, and I am in favor of allowing continued exploration and
development of these resources. But I also know that the latest
developments in automobile engines could reduce our need for foreign
oil and virtually eliminate greenhouse gasses - and reduce the trade
imbalance as a side effect. Because of this, I believe the time is
right to revisit automobile mileage standards. We both know that
the automobile makers won't work to improve their fuel efficiency
unless they are forced to; last year, the average MPG dropped 7%!
So please, as you work for Louisiana this year, please consider raising
the fuel efficiency standards. We have the technology. We have the
need. All we need is your help.
Thank you,
Your actual name
and address, showing that you are a constituent

Move-On's
Guide
to Writing to the Media
- Your newspaper's
letters page should give you an email address or fax number to use, or
you can try this
website.
- Your own words,
written from the heart, are always best.
- Brevity is the
soul of wit.
- The key to
publication is to pounce on something specific you've seen in the
newspaper -- especially an editorial or op-ed article. The issue of
post-war Iraq has been in the news a lot lately -- try to cite a
specific article when you write.
- Be sure to
include your name and address, and especially your phone number when
submitting your letter. Editors need to call you to verify authorship
before they can print your letter. They don't print your phone number.
