Samhain is Gaelic for "summer's end." The long inevitable cold is coming. One year of the old agricultural cycle comes to an end, as the bounty of the summer has been preserved. The land rests. And below the surface, corms and bulbs and perennials dream of spring.
The Solemnities of Samhain welcome our beloved dead -- ancestors, pets, friends -- to join with us when the veil between the worlds is thin. On this night, we can say the things we wish we had told them in life, share the continuity of the generations, forgive and bless one another.
Participants are invited to bring a picture or other memento of deceased loved one/s for our memorial altar. (Please remember to take it home after the ceremony.)
We also take account of our lives for the past year: What have we accomplished which can be counted on to sustain us times dark and cold? What costly lessons were learned? What is best consigned to the merciful compost of the past? What have we done which is worthy of building upon in the future?
Ends and beginnings.
And worship in the face of mystery.
The Night belongs to the Ancient Unavoidable One, She Who receives us all, and to her Counterpart, the Host of Many, God of the Oath.

All are welcome, but this is not a ritual for young children, people who can't sit quietly in a guided meditation, or people who are expecting a wild party. Older children who can behave appropriately at a funeral would appreciate this as an opportunity to memorialize a deceased pet, friend, or relative.
While the ritual ends with a festive welcoming of the Celtic New Year, most of the ceremony is the heaviest of our seasonal cycle. If you want to bring a newcomer, please be sure they have read the above so they understand the nature of our event.

Merry Meet!
Donations We rely on Membership dues and freewill offerings to fund CUUPS TwinCities. These monies allow us to not only use the space at FUS, but also, maintain an extensive web presence, and provide other efforts to strengthen the area Pagan community. Over the past few years, we have experienced a continuing shortfall in Event revenues, which restricts our ability to expand programming. We do not want to "Charge" for Ritual as some groups do. Our hope is that the community will freely and generously contribute to our efforts. If you can contribute 5 to 10 dollars per person, wonderful! However, we will not "pass the hat," and, no one will be turned away because they cannot afford that amount. |
